Joseph Kiran Banda
About
I am a Power Electronics and Electrical machines enthusiast having 8+years of research and development experience (both Industrial and academic) with the design and control of Power Electronic Converters for Renewable Energy Integration and High-performance Motor Drives for Aerospace, Traction, and marine applications supported by relevant patents, research publications, and awards.
I am pursuing a Ph.D. at the Department of Electric Power Engineering under the supervision of Prof. Elisabetta Tedeschi and funded by the SMART PLATFORM project. This project is led by NTNU and is jointly funded by the Research Council of Norway, Equinor, ABB, SAFT batteries, São Paulo State University (UNESP), and the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) as the industrial and academic partners. My Ph.D. aims to enhance Power Quality in offshore Oil and gas platforms with Control of multi-objective Power Electronic Converters interfacing BESS and offshore wind turbines.
Research
My main research focus in Ph.D. is to improve power quality and efficiency on offshore oil and gas platforms integrated with offshore wind turbines to reduce Co2 emissions from gas turbines.
The approach is twofold:
Firstly, by improving power quality directly at the loads:
· Control of medium voltage multi-functional retrofit converters
· Design and control of shunt active power filters (SAPF) for non-linear loads.
Secondly, by improving power quality at the generation interface:
· Co-operative control of BESS power conversion system (PCS) and Wind turbines, mainly solving problems caused by direct line starting of heavy induction motors (3 MW to 8 MW) on Weak grids.
My broad research interests include the following:
· Grid connected Converter control (Grid following and Grid Forming) for renewable energy integration (Onshore/Offshore Wind Power Conversion)
· Design and Control of Grid‑scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS),
· High‑Performance Motor/Generator Control (IPM, SPMSM, and IM),
· Common Mode and Active power filters.
