Kathleen Marie Jennings
About
My academic work has focused primarily on the institutional, operational, conceptual, gendered, and political-economic aspects of UN peace operations in conflict-affected countries. It is characterized by a focus on how organizational rules, regulations, policy, and practice intersect with and impact the everyday, lived realities of people in and affected by national and international security, peacebuilding, and military institutions. My work is cross-disciplinary, encompassing political science and International Relations, critical peace and security studies, gender studies, and political economy, and uses empirical qualitative methods including interviews, focus groups, discourse and documentary analysis, and process tracing. I have fieldwork experience from Liberia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, and Haiti.
In addition to conducting research, I have also worked in an administrative leadership capacity as head of the section for Research and Development at the Faculty of Social Sciences, OsloMet -- Oslo Metropolitan University. I hold a PhD (political science) from the University of Oslo, an M.Phil (politics) from Oxford University, and a BA (political science, honors) from Stanford University.
In the period 2022-2023, I served as elected representative for temporary staff to the Faculty Board, the Faculty Research Committee, and the Faculty Hiring Committee.
From January 2023 until August 2025, I was a member of the leadership group at ISS as Deputy Head of Organization and Development.
I am on research leave during the autumn 2025 semester. During this time, I will be a guest researcher at the Center for Civil-Military Relations at the Institute for Defense Studies in Oslo.
Current research
My current postdoctoral project, conducted at the Department of Sociology and Political Science (ISS), NTNU, examines the discourses related to equality, diversity, and effectiveness within the Norwegian military. I am interested in the interplay between these discourses and evolving notions of citizenship and the national interest, and how these diffuse notions concretely translate into organizational initiatives, internal resource distribution, and (claims of) operational effectiveness.
Previous research projects and themes
Previous research projects have focused on gendered peacekeeping economies, primarily in Liberia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo; sexual exploitation and abuse (SEA) in peacekeeping operations; disarmament, demobilization and reintegration (DDR) of ex-combatants; and women's participation in peacekeeping operations. I have also written on the ethical, practical, and methodological dimensions of conducting fieldwork among vulnerable populations in conflict-affected countries. My PhD project, entitled "Blue Helmet Havens: Gendered Peacekeeping Economies in Liberia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo", was funded by the Research Council of Norway. I have also led or co-led projects with funding from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the US Institute of Peace, the Norwegian Centre for Conflict Resolution, and the Atlas Alliance.
