About
Background
I am research scientist at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. I have a PhD in Gender studies from the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies of Culture, Centre for Gender Research and STS at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. I have a background in Sociology, MPhil degree in Development Studies and Mphil in Childhood Studies both from Norwegian University of Science and Technology.
Research Interests
I am interested in Gender and Feminist studies from an interdisciplinary perspective, focusing on policy, work-life dynamics, gender and organizational structures, gender equality, gender inclusion and diversity. My PhD research work is on gender inclusion and leadership in academia in the Tanzanian context, highliting a deeper understanding of gendered power dynamics in the workplace, focusing on the relationships between spaces of cultural constructs and policy. Currently I am working on renewable energy, capacity building, sustainability and just transition projects. My focus is on rural energy accessibity challenges, paying attention to gender, power dynamics and epistemic justice-in shaping just and sustanable energy transitions. My methodological and analytical tool is centered within interdisciplinarity approach, gender and STS perpectives.
PhD Study
Gender Inclusion and Leadership Positions in Higher Learning Institutions in Tanzania
The study explores spaces of socio-cultural constructs and the gendered dynamics of power experienced through practices in higher learning institutions in Tanzania in order to assess how the practices could be negotiated for strategizing gender inclusion in leadership positions. The main objective is to provide perspectives that can contribute to understanding of the socio-cultural skills, abilities and ways of acting thought appropriate for women’s inclusion in leadership positions, as part of gender inclusion strategies for professionals in higher learning institutions in Tanzania.
the study reveals that the problem of women’s underrepresentation in leadership positions in Tanzanian higher learning institutions appear to be multifaceted and indeed interpreted differently between socio-demographic groups. A peculiar finding in the gender category was about the influence of religion and the likelihood of women academics to avoid leadership roles in higher learning institutions. Existing gender policies are not intensive and extensive enough to address all major issues of the current paradoxes of women’s underrepresentation into leadership positions in higher learning institutions; the gender policies do not contain spaces of leadership constructs; there is no policy-article that specifically addresses leadership aspects, nor is there any gender agenda or women’s agenda in leadership in any policy article; moreover, spaces of culture and gender constructs are not addressed in the gender policy. Further the study points out that to establish practical gender inclusion strategies in higher learning institutions, measures are recommended to focus on, namely policy, women’s inclusion, unfolding blind spots within socio-cultural values, recognition of spaces of socio-demographic attributes, performing action research, networking and focusing on merits by gender needs.
The overall conclusion is that strategizing gender inclusion into leadership positions in Tanzania’s higher learning institutions involves a complex process. To identify its wide scope of mechanisms, it requires an approach that uses both 1) an abstraction — understanding a diverging socio-demographic composition of individuals and dealing with what is shared amongst individuals about their subjective reality in perceiving, and their wish about, practical gender inclusion strategies; and, 2) contextualisation of the interconnected-evidences — paying attention to how socio-cultural and meritocratic systems deeply intertwine and influence women’s experiences and opportunities in academia. Women’s access to leadership positions in higher learning institutions in Tanzania has been hindered to a great extent by the attributes of hidden socio-cultural values (gender division of labour and patriarchy) and to a lesser extent by meritocratic values.
