Trond Are Øritsland
About
I am trained as an industrial designer with a Phd in interaction design, and I have taught interaction design since 1995 and game design for ten years. Today I react to society’s disempowerment of people, as we enclose ourselves in layered systems that take over our agency. I am returning to my Industrial design background as the best way to approach this is in the physical world

Competencies
Research
Research Focus – “Keepworthiness”
The best way to act ecologically is not to act, but to enjoy the thing you already have. My research interest revolves around how designers can help products last a long time, create emotional attachment, and foster a living network of competence.
I have coined the term keepworthiness – the quality that makes objects deserving of long‑term, persistent use. I draw on interconnected ideas from several fields to show why durability means more than just robust materials:
-
Emotional Durability – Building on Jonathan Chapman’s theories of emotional durability, I am interested in how product lifespan, reparability, and meaningful interaction work together to motivate us to keep rather than replace the things we own.
-
Embodied Cognition – Objects that require manual interaction—not mechanically or electronically overridden—as described by David Pye’s “the workmanship of risk,” invite attentive presence, skill development, and bodily understanding. From this arise abilities, rituals, and pride in mastering the material world.
-
Right‑to‑Repair and the Handyman Ideal – Starting from Matthew Crawford’s critique of “nudges” versus “jigs,” I investigate how repair‑friendly design restores human agency, promotes community competence networks, and counters the systematic transfer of human skills to corporations and algorithms.
-
Network of Competence – Inspired by theories of knowledge diffusion, I seek to understand the mechanisms in ecosystems (spare‑part supplies, repair cafés, peer‑learning platforms) that keep objects alive even after the manufacturer has stopped providing parts and support.
Motivation
My goal is to deliver concrete design principles, recommendations, and empirical evidence that give creators, educators, and institutions the means to prioritize longevity, user autonomy, and ecological responsibility in the products and infrastructures of the future
