About

I am an environmental engineer specializing in water quality and treatment, with a focus on how complex mixtures of organic and inorganic pollutants move through, and can be removed from, natural and urban water systems. My research spans drinking water treatment (coagulation–flocculation, porous membranes, and removal of natural organic matter), traffic‑related pollution (tunnel wash water and road runoff), PFAS behavior and remediation (soil–water partitioning, soil washing, and optimization of coagulation/flocculation), and advanced/appropriate treatment of difficult wastewaters such as landfill leachate (including electrochemical oxidation). Recent papers and reports demonstrate: the occurrence, risk, and treatability of tunnel wash water and the effectiveness of secondary treatment (e.g., GAC) in reducing both chemical loads and bioassay responses; how PFAS sorption is controlled by grain size and organic matter residues, with practical implications for soil‑washing trains; and how electrochemical processes can cost‑effectively abate persistent organics in cold‑climate leachates. I also work on nature‑based solutions for urban stormwater, linking design, performance assessment, and maintenance to mainstream their use, and on moving the field toward risk‑based monitoring that blends targeted analytics with effect‑based methods.

Research

My main research focus is related organic and inorganic pollution in natural and urban areas, and how pollution does impact our water resources, which risks are associated with that and how they can be mitigated? Chemicals are everywhere and new chemicals are developed and introduced at record speed. Many chemicals are designed to have powerful effects, for example pharmaceuticals, herbicides, pesticides, plasticizers etc., contained in building materials, paints, vehicles, clothes and many more.

Eventually, many of these chemicals end up in the environment, where they can be transported for example by water or air, and can undergo transformation into unknown products, for example by UV-radiation and biological processes. In such a setting analysis and risk assessment become a challenge since it is unknown which chemicals may be present and how toxic they may be as they will act together as mixtures and not as individual compounds. Chemicals can be present at concentrations below the detection limit but still can contribute to toxic effects. This requires effect-based methods for risk-based water quality analysis. Of special concern are chemicals like PFAS, because they can be characterised as being, persistent, mobile and toxic (PMT).

Climate change is expected to intensify pollution related challenges, for example because of increased frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, that can mobilize pollution from areas that otherwise were considered save, for example due to flooding, mobilization from urban surfaces, industrial sites or agricultural land, and sewer overflow. While control of pollutants at the source may proof to be the most efficient approach, chemicals will be released and engineering solutions for handling both diffuse and point sources will be required.

NATURE THRIVES - NATURE-based urban water Transitions for Healthy, Resilient, InclusiVE regional Scapes

Implementation of Nature-Based Solutions for urban water management: towards standardization, well tested and monitored solutions and positive communication of the successful transition.

INFILTRATE: Roadside swale/buffer strip infiltration systems for treatment of road runoff in Nordic countries

The main purpose of this project is to increase the knowledge about and produce guidance on infiltration solutions used for pollution control in road runoff. This includes water quality measurements and environmental risk assessment.

Treatment of wash water from road tunnels

Tunnel wash water is highly contaminated water containing high concentrations of pollutants like trace metals, PAH, PFAS, BTH, benzotriazoles, bisphenols, microplastics etc. The project investigates future treatment and management strategies.

My teaching approach is built on a deliberate shift from traditional lecture‑driven instruction toward a research‑informed, inquiry‑based model that fosters deep learning, professional competence, and student ownership. Drawing on principles from PBL, TBL, and CDIO, I design learning environments where students work with authentic datasets, open‑ended engineering problems, and laboratory experiences that mirror the complexity and uncertainty of real water and wastewater challenges. Central to my practice is formative assessment, inspired by Wiliam’s evidence‑based framework, which creates continuous feedback loops that clarify expectations, reveal learning progress, and guide real‑time adjustments for both students and teacher. Through structured teamwork, reflection routines, and integration of technical, analytical, and communication skills, I support students in developing not only conceptual understanding but also the engineering mindset needed for professional practice, like critical thinking, decision‑making under uncertainty, and the ability to justify and defend solutions.
