SAMSOL – Solar energy for the Arctic’s future
How can solar energy help provide a resilient and sustainable energy supply in the Arctic?
SAMSOL explores the role solar energy could play in Svalbard’s energy transition. The project brings together researchers at NTNU and UNIS to develop and share knowledge about solar energy in Arctic conditions.
Why do we need SAMSOL?
Svalbard’s energy supply is changing. The polar night, snow and harsh climate place particular demands on energy solutions.
SAMSOL investigates how solar energy could form part of a resilient and more sustainable energy system in the Arctic.
What we do
The project brings together researchers from different disciplines to share knowledge and develop collaboration in areas such as:
- Solar energy and solar cells in Arctic regions
- Integrating solar cells into buildings and energy systems
- Snow and Arctic conditions
- Energy planning
Sharing expertise and holding interdisciplinary workshops are central to the project.
How the knowledge will be used
SAMSOL will strengthen the knowledge base for further research and energy planning in Arctic regions.
By connecting researchers from different disciplines, the project will also lay the foundations for new collaborations and further research.
What do we want to achieve?
Our goal is to develop knowledge that can support a resilient, sustainable and low-carbon energy transition on Svalbard and across the Arctic.
