Novel states of matter

– Dennis Meier

Our research studies the emergence of novel states of matter, arising from the intricate coupling of spin, charge, and orbital degrees of freedom in low symmetry systems with strongly correlated electrons. Of special interest are functional nano-objects, such as ferroic domain walls and magnetic skyrmions. For investigating their fundamental physics we are applying different imaging techniques including

  • Tunneling electron microscopy
  • Cathode-lens microscopy
  • Scanning probe microscopy

This unique combination of complementary microscopy methods allows for continuously covering all length scales from the sub-nanometer regime up to mesoscopic distances in spatially resolved measurements.
