Political economy of development, institutions, economic geography

Gina Eckhoff

My research lies at the intersection of political economy, development, and economic geography. By combining theory and applied microeconometrics in quasi-experimental research designs, I study what determines where economic activity is located, how inequality and early state formation develop, and where the state is more likely to use strategic violence against civilians during civil war.

I investigated how sustainable circular economy strategies can be adopted in offshore wind sector, and adjacent industries with similar waste challenges.  To do this, I mapped and structured 30+ organisations in the entire offshore wind value chain, and conducted 20 strategic discussions with senior stakeholders in global organisations, to identify key drivers and barriers and develop actionable strategies for accelerating sustainable and circular-economy adoption in the sector. I also developed a range of cross-industry, market and policy recommendations to accelerate circular economy strategy uptake in offshore wind and other major industries, including fisheries, aquaculture, solar PV, and the electric vehicle industry.
