Development of pedagogical merit systems at NTNU

NTNU and the Arctic University of Norway (UiT) established a system for recognition of merit in 2017, and the schemes were developed in cooperation with higher education institutions in Sweden.

Universities and university colleges in Sweden have long-term experience with merit schemes for academic staff. The merit schemes are largely based on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) (Report to the Storting 16, p. 77).

The starting point for SoTL is that a good teacher should be able to make knowledge-based and well-founded choices of teaching methods, and that teachers should share their experiences.

Knowledge of factors that improve learning outcomes for students is important for work on education quality at NTNU, and teaching staff who work together and share valuable experience are important for collective development of the programmes of study at the university. The merit scheme at NTNU is based on the pedagogical competence model.

From 2022, there will be annual announcements for the status of Excellent Teaching Practitioner at NTNU with an announcement on 1 March and an application deadline on 31 August.

Previous calls for applications

Previous calls for applications

NTNU has carried out two calls for applications where academic staff can achieve excellent teaching practitioner status. In December 2017, the first nine excellent teaching practitioners were announced, and in 2018/2019 a further twelve employees were awarded excellent teaching practitioner status.

The two calls for applications at NTNU have been conducted as pilots and were evaluated in 2019-2020. The evaluation report forms the basis for further development of pedagogical merit recognition at NTNU.
