Future Hydropower plants

Future Hydropower plants

What is the ideal future hydropower plant? Our goal is to develop innovative, economically and environmentally sustainable technologies to improve the flexibility of hydropower.

Among other things, we study designs for variable operation and flexibility, improved solutions for operation, maintenance and digital systems, and sediment management.

  • RP 1.1: New hydropower plants - Design and construction

This project is dedicated to the development of improved design of future hydropower plants.  The work will focus on technological and environmental solutions for intakes and outlets, tunnel systems, powerhouse arrangements and pump-turbine submergence.

  • RP-1.2 Design for intermittent operation and high ramping rates

New demands for intermittent operation and ramping creates new challenges in hydropower plants, and lead to strain on infrastructure such as dams, turbines, generators, and require new solutions and knowledge to mitigate environmental effects and adaptations of control systems.

  • RP-1.3 Holistic Monitoring and Condition Prediction of Hydropower Plants

This project aims to develop and demonstrate cutting-edge digital technologies that enhance the flexibility, resilience, and environmental performance of hydropower systems. The focus of RP-1.3 is on integrating high-resolution monitoring, hybrid machine learning models, and digital twins to support real-time operation, predictive maintenance, and adaptive planning.

  • RP-1.4 Sediment Handling

This project will focus on handling of sediments in hydropower systems. We will look into effectivity and economic outcome of measures, including improved turbine and structural designs, focusing on turbine and machines vs. structures. Evaluating environmental consequences of these measures will be part of the project.
