Sediment Handling
Project RP-1.4 will focus on handling of sediments in hydropower systems. The project will look into effectivity and economic outcome of measures, including improved turbine and structural designs, focusing on turbine and machines vs. structures. Evaluating environmental consequences of these measures will be part of the project.
Further the project will look into costs of turbine erosion and improvements, like sand traps, trash racks, sediment bypass tunnels and ensuring system continuity.
Operational system and integration of renewable energies related to climate change will also be evaluated.
Technical elements to be evaluated:
- Turbine design
- Tunnel design focusing on abrasion and effectivity
- Challenges connected to boulders at intakes and in tunnels
