About the course

Course content

The course explores concepts and practices related to sustainable business development and the integration of sustainability considerations in corporate processes. Emphasis is placed on how to incorporate economic, environmental and social objectives into an organisation's strategy, culture and practice to create long-term value for the organisation, its stakeholders and society at large. The course also considers the role of the individual - the student - in creating societal change and making a difference.

Central topics in the course include:

  • Frameworks, theories and concepts for sustainable value creation
  • Sustainability strategies and barriers for implementing such strategies
  • Emerging markets as contexts with opportunities and challenges for Western businesses

Learning outcome

On satisfactory completion of this course, you should be able to:

  1. Evaluate the ways in which companies are not sustainable by utilizing theoretical knowledge
  2. Analyze the role of companies in society and in relation to sustainability challenges by utilizing theoretical knowledge
  3. Reflect on the different roles one has in relation to sustainability challenges
  4. Evaluate and explain the complexities companies face when dealing with sustainability challenges by utilizing theoretical knowledge
  5. Design solutions for a particular organization to become more sustainable based on academic literature
  6. Present and communicate ideas and findings with academic and business professionals in an international context

Learning methods and activities

The course consists of a combination of lectures and guest lectures, casework, group work, presentations, and literature discussions.

Further on evaluation

The assessment in the course consists of three elements: a reflection diary (individual) 20%, an essay (individual) 30% and a group assignment 50%. All elements must be passed in order to get a grade in the course.

Information about the elements and exam aids will be given at the start of the semester. Mandatory assignments must be approved in order to get access to the graded elements.

There will be no resit exam in this course. All elements of the portfolio must be retaken on the next ordinary exam. Approved mandatory assignments are valid for later, unless there are significant changes to the course.
