About the course
Course content
The course is part of the subject construction engineering and project management, and will largely be related to planning and construction of roads, tunnels and rock spaces, production of building materials in quarries and earth moving.
The participant:
- will have general knowledge about heavy construction machines and equipment.
- Can use NS8141, NS3420 and process code 1,
- should be able to use project management programs (MS Project and Excel).
- Know the basics of pricing and writing a good offer.
Digital string: Digital processing knowledge and skills in the use of MS Project and MS Excel.
Innovation string: In depth knowledge on the construction industry and its challenges. Introduction to innovation and change processes
Ethical string: Environmental focus on the construction industry, and its options for bettering the CO2 footprint of construction projects. Focus on engineering decorum.
Learning outcome
Knowledge The candidate:
- will gain a general understanding of the construction industry and projects, processes and organizational structure.
- The candidate will have knowledge of soil and rock properties, rock drilling, rock blasting and initiation and basic knowledge in civil explosives over and underground. Will have the knowledge about tunneling and tunneling methods both conventional and mechanical, vibrations problems and solutions, construction machinery, loading and hauling and planning of construction projects.
- Be introduced to the digital tools that are well-suited for the construction industry. The candidate will be informed about innovation and environmental aspects. Ethics is a topic that will be discussed with the students.
Skills.
- The candidate should be able to calculate time and cost for construction work, determine drilling and initiation plans for blasting work over and underground. Be involved in vibration calculation and control; be familiar with construction economics related to heavy construction machines.
- The candidate must be able to perform a bid calculation with prices in Focus Anbud program, using digital tools, like Microsoft Office, and plan a project manually and with a focus on Microsoft Project and Excel, so that students are better prepared for the digital world upon graduation.
- •Be guided through the processes of innovation and entrepreneurship. The candidate should understand and be able to handle environmental challenges in the construction industry.
- Have a deeper understanding of ethical topics.
General Competence:
- The candidate will be familiar with the use of various construction machines, acquire basic estimation and cost control skills, acquire basic planning skills.
- The candidate should be able to use spreadsheets and other software to manage construction projects, learn how to calculate, monitor and influence production processes. Will carry a good understanding of material behavior, develop good understanding and involvement in health and safety procedures (HSE), grow teamwork and communication skills, and finally yet importantly, feel a sense of professionalism and encouraging ethical practices.
The course is to cultivate teamwork, innovation, entrepreneurship and communication skills, and last but not least, it fires a sense of professionalism and encourages ethics and ethical practice.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures, exercises individually and in groups, excursion and oral student presentation.
All exercises are mandatory.

Exam. 3 out of 3 exercises are mandatory and must be approved to gain admission to the exam.
In case of a resit exam, written exam may by changed into oral.
A re-sit examination is held in May/June.

Admission to Bachelor of Civil Engineering, study track Civil and Environmental Engineering (Trondheim)
