Course content

The course provides students with an in-depth exploration of selected topics of global economic history after the Napoleonic wars (1814/1815) and locates them in the larger cultural and societal context of the period under examination. Although course topics may vary with regard to periods, regions and countries, they should always be assessed from various perspectives. Crucial keywords for topics which may be offered are:

 

-Globalisation and de-globalisation: For example, the growth of international trade

-The international economic system, including the development from the gold standard during the 19th century to today‘s liberal economic order.

Learning outcome

A candidate who passes this course is expected to have the following learning outcome according to the course curriculum, defined as knowledge and skills:

Knowledge: The candidate
• has comprehensive knowledge about Global economic history after the Napoleonic period;
• in-depth understanding of the different theoretical and/or methodical perspectives and approaches in the field modern economic history;

Skills: candidates should be able
• to analyse and discuss central developments covered in the course
• to reflect orally and in writing about central problems and debates
• to apply empirical knowledge and theoretical approaches for analyse issues independently.

Learning methods and activities

The course will be assessed by way of a semester paper and a final examination (the former must be passed to sit the latter).
