About

About the course

Course content

The course provides a basic introduction to the assessment and use of artificial intelligence (AI) in design processes. Artificial intelligence can be used in design processes to automate routine tasks, to synthesize research, to develop ideas and for prototyping, to data-driven design and to evaluate design. AI technology is still immature and the use of the technology requires evaluation and critical assessment of the roles of AI, and the impact and results of using AI-technology. Students will get a basic introduction to the use of AI in design processes and learn about basic evaluation of the use of AI in design.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:

  • General, basic knowledge of AI.
  • Specific knowledge of the use of AI in design processes, both divergent and convergent.
  • Knowledge of evaluation and assessment of positive and negative aspects of the use of AI in design processes in light of ethical, environmental, legal and social considerations.

Skills:

  • Can choose suitable AI tools for different parts of the design process: Insights, ideation, prototyping and evaluation.
  • Can use suitable AI tools for different parts of the design process: Insights, ideation, prototyping and evaluation.
  • Can critically assess the use of AI tools in different parts of design processes.

General competencies:

  • Have general competence about AI and the use of AI in design processes.
  • Have general competence in critically assessing the use of AI in design processes, both in terms of AI's role in the processes and the results of using AI in these.
  • Have general competence in the use of AI in human-centered design processes.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, exercises, assignments and independents studies.

The course may be offered to incoming exchange students and may be taught in English.

Compulsory assignments

  • Oblig 1
  • Oblig 2

Further on evaluation

(the information may be changed until June 15th)

Two compulsory deliveries. A design assignment that is submitted at the end and graded as pass/fail.
