Course - Testing and Evaluation - IDG2030
Testing and Evaluation
New from the academic year 2026/2027
About
About the course
Course content
The course introduces various methods for testing and evaluation, focusing on assessing design solutions from a usability perspective.
Selection of evaluation methods, both qualitative and quantitative, interpretation of results, and presentation and reporting of findings are central topics.
Students will develop both knowledge and skills to analyse and apply results from testing/evaluation for design optimization.
The course also introduces scientific theoretical concepts and issues, as well as ethical considerations related to testing and evaluation.
Learning outcome
Knowledge
Upon completion, the candidate has knowledge of:
- evaluation methods and different forms of testing user interfaces and design solutions.
- quantitative and qualitative methods.
- data analysis.
- validity and reliability of various testing and evaluation methods.
- visualization and presentation of data.
- ethical considerations in usability testing.
Skills
Upon completion, the candidate can:
- plan, design, and conduct user tests effectively and in a balanced manner.
- choose the most appropriate evaluation method for a given situation.
- assess a solution and its performance against given requirements.
- collect data, interpret and process results for design optimization.
- present results in an informative and clear way.
General Competence
The candidate can:
- interpret and apply statistics, academic literature, and various methods for testing and evaluation in a design project.
- plan, conduct, and communicate evaluation of design solutions.
Learning methods and activities
The course consists of a combination of lectures and mandatory exercises/group work.
The main focus is on projects where students plan, conduct, and present results from user testing and evaluation of different solutions.
Mandatory Activities
- Assignment 1, Planning
- Assignment 2, Execution
- Assignment 3, Analysis
- Assignment4, Oral Presentation
The course may be offered to incoming exchange students and can therefore be taught in English.
Compulsory assignments
- Planning
- Execution
- Analysis
- Oral Presentation
Further on evaluation
Mandatory assignments are distributed across four compulsory tasks that must be approved to qualify for the exam.
Exam:
- Project report (60%)
- Written exam (3 hours) (40%)
Both the project report and the written exam must be passed to receive a grade in the course.
If the assessment is not passes, an improved project report and written exam may be retaken toward the end of the following semester.
For voluntary retake to improve the grade, the entire course must be retaken in its entirety the next regular offering of the course.
