Course content

Quantitative analysis: Types and sources of errors. Standard deviation and statistical testing. Chromatographic theory and principles, adsorption chromatography (normal and reverse phase), GC, HPLC. Acid-base-titration: pH-calculations, titration curves, mass-balance, charge-balance and proton-balance, indicators, log-log-diagram for acid-base-system, buffer capacity. Gravimetry, precipitation titration and complexometric titrations. Electrochemical methods: potentiometry, voltammetry. Spectroscopy: electromagnetic radiation, absorption and emission. UV-VIS spectroscopy. Molecular fluorescence spectroscopy. Atom absorption spectrometry (AAS). Mass spectrometry (ICP-MS).

Learning outcome

The candidate is able to:

  • describe the principles of basic analytical methods and perform calculations related to quantitative analysis
  • use computer tools to construct titration curves and log-log-diagrams for acid-base-systems, and use them to find relevant properties
  • prepare, perform, document and report results from different chemical analytical methods
  • perform quantitative analysis independently and accurate, and evaluate the uncertainty of the results

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, theory exercises and laboratory work with compulsory attendance and report submissions. Expected scope: Lectures: 60 hours, Laboratory work: 60 hours. Exercises: 20 hours. Self-study: 60 hours

Compulsory assignments

  • Therory Exercises
  • Laboratory work

Further on evaluation

All compulsory work requirements (exercises, laboratory work) must be approved to take the final written exam. Information about the required number of approved exercises is given at the beginning of the semester. The final course grade is calculated from grade on work (laboratory course, counts 30%) and the final exam (counts 70%). Both parts must be passed to pass the course. Postponed examination: August.
In case of postponed examination (continuation examination), written examination may be changed to oral examination. When repeating the course because the students have not passed the course, the part(s) that is not passed must be redone. The laboratory course can not be redone before the next ordinary course implementation. If the student wants to improve the grade, only the final written examination can be redone, and the assessment of laboratory work remains as it is. The laboratory course grade cannot be contested. For applications for credentialing, approval and integration of courses from previous years or other institutions' equivalent education, each application will be processed individually and the applicant must be able to count credits for overlapping courses.
Permitted aids on the final written exam: specific, simple calculator and Gordon Aylward and Tristan Findlay: SI Chemical Data, Wiley, 7th Edition, 2014 or later. (auxiliary code C).
