Course content
This course offers knowledge of Latin or Greek literature that has not been studied on bachelor level and gives the students an overview of the history of Latin or Greek language and literature.
Learning outcome
A candidate who passes this course is expected to have the following learning outcome according to the course curriculum, defined as knowledge and skills:
Knowledge
- The candidate is expected to have knowledge about the Latin (or Greek) language, literature and culture from all periods: Classical Latin (or Attic Greek), Medieval Latin (or Koine Greek) and Neo Latin (or Byzantine Greek).
- The candidate is also expected to have advanced knowledge about one of the periods and achieve academic skills concerning its literature (all texts should be read in critical editions supported by scholarly commentaries, for the classical studies option, and in translation for the ancient civilisation option).
Skills
The candidate is expected
- to be able to read and interpret texts from the different periods of the Latin (or Greek) literature and culture.
- be able to give gramatical, stylistic, literary and metrical analyses of the texts on the syllabus.
- to be able to discuss the texts in a literary, cultural and historical context.
- to be able to relate the texts to the relevant research literature.

Admission to a programme of study is required:
History (MHIST) - some programmes
Required previous knowledge
Entry to the course requires admission to the Master's proramme in History, study option Classical studies. 80 credits Latin or Greek, or 22.5 credits in Latin or Greek for the ancient cilvilisation option.
Course materials
Ca. 200 pages original Latin or Greek literature + secondary literature (with the exclusion of literature read on bachelor level and KLAS3105) or 400 pages translated Latin or Greek texts to be chosen after consultation with the professor.
