Course content

Digital Cultures is a course about the internet, daily life and culture. It examines primarily Web 2.0 as an arena for new cultural practices and mediated community. The course focuses on users as co-producers of social media, digital culture, video games and technology trends. A key element is different pop cultural phenomenon and digital everyday practices.

Learning outcome

The students will have knowledge about:
• what digital cultures are, and different practices related to these
• controversies related to the introduction and use of new media technologies
• digital cultures as cultural expressions

The students will have skills in:
• analyzing digital cultures as cultural expression
• practicing analyzing mediated processes
• how to write an argumentative text

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and seminars. The course emphasizes the use of new media, both in teaching and evaluation. Home exam (6-7 pages), requires approval of one written assignment (3-4 pages).

Compulsory assignments

  • One written exercise (3-4 pages)
