About the course

Course content

The thesis should normally contain between 20 000 and 34 000 words. It shall demonstrate the ability to carry out an independent scientific research task. The thesis can be written as two articles with a common introduction of between 15 000 and 24 000 words. The topic for the master's thesis is selected in consultation with a supervisor, preferably in connection with an existing research project and shall be approved in the first semester.

Learning outcome

The thesis work will provide students with practical training in conducting research work. The student will learn how a problem is constructed and how empirical material is collected and analyzed. The students will gain experience in presenting research material in written form. The work will provide expertise in analyzing socio-technical phenomena and changes.

KNOWLEDGE :

A candidate with a thesis in STS:

  • has good knowledge about the development of research design and methodology of a limited research mission
  • is able to consider appropriate sources and obtaining these
  • can use theory and prepare relevant analysis strategies
  • has knowledge of research ethics guidelines

SKILLS :

A candidate with a thesis in STS has:

  • the ability to study a large portfolio of cases, analyze them and draw sound conclusions
  • training in a type of systematics and abstraction suitable for use in research work, innovation, education and policy development

Learning methods and activities

Students receive individual guidance on assignment writing. Master’s students at the Faculty of Humanities are required to acquaint themselves with the content of the webpage on the master’s thesis, which outlines the rights and obligations of the student, the supervisor, and the department in relation to the master's thesis. An adjusting oral part is included in the assessment.

The Master's thesis must include an abstract, in both Norwegian and English, at approx. 300 words (max. 1 page).

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Science and Technology Studies (STS) (MSTS)

Required previous knowledge

Admission to the master's programme in STS. To complete the thesis, the students must have passed KULT3301, KULT3303, KULT3304, KULT3322, EiT, KULT3307 or equivalent.
