About

About the course

Course content

Arts and crafts 1 consists of two semesters, subject 1 and subject 2, and qualify for teaching in arts and crafts from 1th to 7th grade in primary school. The subject contributes to insight into the subject's core elements art and design processes, cultural understanding, craft skills and visual communication, where the elements are linked to subject didactic reflection. The subject has an aesthetic (sensual) approach to learning where both the practical and the cognitive are intertwined in exploratory creative learning processes without clear answers. These aim to stimulate curiosity, a desire to explore, courage, creative joy and problem solving in a learning environment based on security and dialogue. It promotes independence, identity development, analytical skills and critical reflection. The interdisciplinary topic of public health and coping with life is therefore a natural part of the course. The arts and crafts subject is interdisciplinary through, among other things, work with natural materials, floor plans and calculations, written reports and logs. Knowledge of cultural and social development is represented through art historical themes, cultural heritage and sustainability perspectives.

The course consists of three areas:

Arts and crafts: The course emphasizes work with sculpture and visual two-dimensional expressions such as photography, graphics, painting and drawing. Form, colour, composition and other visual means are central themes. Arrangements are made for the student to work in open, exploratory creative processes with independent work and opportunities for developing their own expression. Basic training is provided in materials and techniques within the arts and crafts subject. Cultural heritage and sustainability.

Art and cultural understanding: The subject focuses on cultural understanding with an emphasis on Norwegian and international art from neoclassicism to the present day. Through the exploration of various cultural expressions, one can see oneself and others in a historical and cultural context, thereby increasing awareness of democracy and citizenship. This competence can strengthen the student in the face of today's massive image culture.

Subject didactics: Subject didactics is an integral part of the work in the subject, and shows how to organize learning in arts and crafts. The subject's relevance and legitimation as a general education subject in school is an important part of this. The subject presents a great variety in teaching, guidance and assessment forms. This can equip students to promote students' creative and practical development in the subject, and contributes to mastery and joy. The student's own experiences from creative creative processes in the subject and theoretical and practical competence are important factors.

Learning outcome

KNOWLEDGE

The student

  • has knowledge of materials, techniques, tools and formal aesthetic tools that are fundamental in work with sculpture and two-dimensional visual expressions such as photography, graphics, drawing and painting.

  • has knowledge of the main features of the arts and crafts subject's content, methods and the subject's importance and potential in school.
  • has knowledge of children's natural development within both two- and three-dimensional expressions and materials, with associated theories on aesthetic and bodily learning processes and creativity.
  • have knowledge of how the subject's working methods and approach to learning can be included in interdisciplinary contexts.

SKILLS

The student

  • has basic craft skills within sculpture and two-dimensional visual expressions such as photography, graphics, drawing and painting.
  • can work purposefully with idea development, sketching process, documentation and assessment of own and others' creative processes and products.
  • can experiment with relevant materials, tools and techniques in their own works, and use central materials, tools and techniques in work with image and sculpture.
  • can work with digital tools for exploration within visual expressions, and use digital learning arenas for obtaining and disseminating subject matter.
  • can analyze visual expressions and critically assess meaning, ethical issues and visual quality.
  • can use art in the local environment as a source of experience and acquisition of knowledge as a starting point for own work and as a resource for student assignments.

  • can utilize variations in visual expressions in both sculpture and two-dimensional expressions as a starting point for tasks and professional conversation.
  • can invite other subjects to practical, theoretical and didactic collaboration and generate interdisciplinary and scientifically exploratory forms of work and understanding.

Learning methods and activities

The study is harmonized with the working methods in the current curriculum for primary school. Teaching is carried out practically and theoretically in varied learning environments. The students work individually and in groups. A significant amount of work is required through self-study where the students work on tasks in extension of self-selected problems. The study will consist of an alternation between one's own practical creative work, art and cultural understanding, theoretical studies and collaboration with the field of practice. Reflection on one's own work and that of others is central. The students will work on academic and current issues. Documentation of work processes and reflection must take place through analogue or digital logs. Excursions to exhibitions and art in the local environment are an important part of the course.

Compulsory assignments

  • Obligatory course work according to course description

Further on evaluation

Compulsory activities.

Mandatory work requirements:

  • Practical-aesthetic tasks within a given theme.
  • Written group assignment in subject didactics related to art and cultural understanding.

Compulsory attendance appears in the semester schedule.

In the event of absence from compulsory activity, compensatory work may be given.

Mandatory attendance at introductory sessions in the various workshops and presentations according to the semester plan.

Mandatory work requirements are assessed with approved/not approved.

Assessment

- Part 1 Practical Examination The practical exam takes the form of an individual exhibition consisting of creative works and a reflective log. It accounts for 51% of the final grade. A grade reduction will be applied if all assigned tasks are not included in the exhibition.

- Part 2. The oral examination shall demonstrate both practical and theoretical knowledge within the areas of image and sculpture, art and form culture, and subject didactics.

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) may be used as a support tool, for example for idea development and structuring, but its use must be clearly described in the submission. Text, images, or other content generated by AI must not be used directly in the submission, but should be critically incorporated into the student's own independent work.
