About the course

Course content

The course focus on music and sound in relation to audiovisual media. It addresses film sound and computer games. The knowledge is put into practice through exercises and use of relevant and accessible technology.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:

The candidate

  • Understands the principles connected to music and sound in audiovisual media
  • Has knowledge working with film and computer games with a particular focus on the role of the sound
  • Understands basic theory connected to music and sound design in relation to audiovisual media
  • Knows various strategies for the application of sound in computer games
  • Has basic historical overview of the role of sound in film and computer games through representative examples

Skills:

The candidate

  • Can analyze dramatic elements in a story and express them through music and sound
  • Can compose, design, and mix music and sound effects for film, including integration with voice and dialog
  • Can create and organize sound material for computer games
  • Can master the basic technological tools for integrating sound in film and computer games

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and practical exercises: The exercises consist of practical assignments related to using sound and music in combination with film and computer games. Information about exercises and requirements is given in Blackboard at semester start. There will be 6-8 excersises in addition to schedueled practical exercises.

Teaching is usually conducted in Norwegian, but may take place in English.

Instruction is obligatory and demands minimum 80% attendance.

Further on evaluation

The exam consists of a production on approximately 5 minutes with a following report on 3-5 pages.

Required previous knowledge

The course requires admission to the Master's Programme in Music Technology. 1-2 places are reserved for students at the Master's programmes in Film and Video Production or Music Perfomance Studies, or at the Master's programme in Electronic Systems Design and Innovation - Acoustics.
