About the course
Course content
The course combines compositional practices with studies of musical scores and musical analysis. The aim is to obtain insight into different procedures of creating compositional forms. The formal processes in compositions from different parts of history, as well as contemporary compositions with different aesthetic foundations, are studied in the light of different analytical theories.
Learning outcome
Knowledge:
An examinee with a completed qualification in MUSV3118
- has in-depth knowledge about compositional form strategies
- has general knowledge of the musicological and compositional fields the advanced subject belongs to
- has knowledge of historical and contemporary research questions within the subject
- has knowledge of theories and research methods within the subject
- has knowledge which makes it possible to place and understand the subject within the frame of history of musical composition and history of research
Skills:
An examinee with a completed qualification in MUSV3118
- can express his/her deepened knowledge in a convincing way, both in writing and speech
- can individually find and assess relevant research based knowledge to illuminate a problem within the subject
- can, based on his/her deepened knowledge, discuss academic texts in a diversified way, enter a dialogue with the texts of others and carry out his/her own reasoning, both in writing and speech
- can utilize analytical methods on an independent and critical basis
Learning methods and activities
Lectures and a syllabus, combined with a curriculum of musical works for analysis, as well as practical exercises where this is relevant for the content and focus of the course.
Further on evaluation
The essay for the home examination has a maximum length of 10 typed pages (line-spacing 1.5, 12pt font size).
If the course is not passed, the student must retake the whole assessment.
