About the course

Course content

In the first part of the course, a broad introduction to pedagogical research methods is provided. This includes quantitative approaches, qualitative approaches, historical approaches, text/discourse analytical approaches, literature review as a method, as well as knowledge of the scientific theoretical basis for the research field, and research ethics.

Learning outcome

The student has:

  • thorough insight into key principles of educational research methods
  • specialized knowledge and skills in qualitative approaches, quantitative approaches, as well as historical and text/discourse analytical approaches
  • specialized knowledge of the scientific theoretical basis of educational research
  • knowledge and skills in the method of literature review
  • advanced understanding of the research process and skills in formulating research questions, choosing research designs, selecting units of analysis, and data collection
  • advanced knowledge of quality criteria in research methodology and research ethics

The course provides a basis for conducting their own master's thesis project. One of the purposes of the work in the course is the possibility to reuse it in the master's thesis.

Learning methods and activities

Lecture/Seminar: 4 hours of lecture/seminar per week in weeks 34-40. The teaching can be scheduled in blocks.

Mandatory activities: Minimum 80% attendance at all lectures.

  • 80 % attendance in lectures

Required previous knowledge

Bachelor's degree in social sciences, educational sciences, humanities or equivalent.

Course materials

The required course reading material is on approximately 500 pages.
