About the course

Course content

The course is part of the professional education courses in the 5-year-integrated master study programmes for teacher education, and is one of four courses students take in subject didactics.

The course covers topics relating to teaching and to pupils' learning. Learning comprises both cognitive, bodily, aesthetic and creative learning processes. The learning process is also affected by affective aspects, such as motivation, attitudes, identity and emotions.

The course gives students a basis for planning, carrying out, evaluating and reflecting on teaching, based on academic and experience-based knowledge and theory. Analysing and observing connections between different perspectives, theories and research studies is an integrated element in the course objectives. Knowledge about and insight into subject-didactical theory and research provides students with the competencies they need in order to conduct systematic research- and development projects in schools.

Learning methods and activities

The course is the second part of subject didactics within the 5-year-programme, and the teaching takes place in the spring term.

Realization of the course objectives requires an interplay between subject disciplinary competence, teaching competence, acquisition of subject didactical theories and terminologies as well as reflection on own teaching practice and cooperation with the practice schools. The students will experience a variation of teaching methods and activities, and also different learning arenas.

Interdisciplinarity is emphasized across the courses in subject didactics, as when students conduct a group-based research- and development work. The research- and development work is conducted in the subject didactics that belongs to the students' subject 1.

A certification responsibility has been ascribed to NTNU, to ensure that students master key competences for their future profession as teachers for grades 8-13. A minimum of 75 % attendance is hence required to be allowed to sit the exam in the course. It is essential that students develop into independent and responsible teachers who are able to cooperate with peer students and future colleagues. Personal effort is hence important not only for own learning, but also for peers' and colleagues' professional development. All obligatory activities must be approved before students can sit the exams.

Further on evaluation

Both bokmål and nynorsk must be used in the exam papers.

Defined work requirements are prepared for each subject didactics course and made available to students at the start of the semester. Additionally, defined work requirements consist of activities and guidance related to R&D work in the student's subject 1.

If the semester assignment is failed, it can be resubmitted as an improved version once. The same applies to the repetition of a passed assessment. For a detailed description of the assessment in the course, see the teaching plan and a separate document describing the R&D work.

Passed exams according to the study plan. The requirements relating to previous knowledge must be met prior to starting the course.
