About

About the course

Course content

The course is a theoretical specialization course in cognitive neuroscience with a focus on the general theory of the function of the nervous system. There is a consistent focus on the relationship between central nervous system segregation and integration. Examples are given of how different cognitive functions can be analyzed in this perspective, such as sensory perception, motor functions, language and memory. An introduction is given to important methods in cognitive neuroscience, including lesion methods, and eletrophysiological and MRI-based methods. The course emphasizes a critical approach to theory based on an understanding of the possibilities and limitations of the various neuroscientific and cognitive methods.

Learning outcome

Knowledge: After completing the course, the student has advanced knowlede about key theories about the human nervous system, with a focus on functional segregation and integration. In addition, the student has acquired an asvanced understanding of key methods in cognitive neuroscience, such as single cell recording, the lesion method, functional MRI, including statistical network analysis. Furthermore, the student has in-depth knowledge of selected topics in cognitive neuroscience, such as sensory perception, motor systems, language and memory.

Skills: The student has developed an advanced theoretical understanding of the human nervous system and can analyze and discuss the relationship between theory and empirical data in light of known methodological limitations.

General competence: The student has acquired an advanced understanding of scientific reasoning. In particular, the student has developed the ability to critically analyze neuroscientific theories.
