Course content
Varies with regards to the current topic being addressed. An identical version of the exam paper cannot be used directly in the PhD thesis as an article or a chapter. A revised version of the exam paper may be included in the thesis.
Learning outcome
Knowledge:
- has a thorough knowledge of theories that are central to the work of the PhD thesis.
- has an overview of other relevant theories used in Anthropology.
Skills:
- receives training in getting a overview of relevant literature.
- receives training and skills in written communication of research results through report writing.
General qualifications:
- acquires through this topic a basis for an independent, critical and reflective attitude to their own and others' research as a result of specialization in theoretical topics.
Learning methods and activities
The Course is set up with an individual reading syllabus and allows for a large degree of adaptation to individual research questions. The course is set up with 10 hours of Supervision including time for before and after work, and must contain the following elements:
-Approved layout of the reading syllabus (approx. 400 pages).
- Completed supervision - 10 hours, individually or in a group with others who work within the same problem.
-The subject can be supported by participation in courses, seminars or conferences which are not in themselves part of any PhD programme, and the essay can be presented as a paper at a conference.
Registration for the course is done via Studentweb, but requires in addition that the PhD candidate personally establishes contact with a potential academic supervisor at the Department (usually the main ph.d. supervisor).
An agreement will be made between the candidate and the supervisor on a separate form which is available from the Department, including a list of literature checked by the supervisor, which constitutes the course curriculum.
The course is reserved for PhD candidates in social anthropology at the the Faculty's PhD program.

The candidate writes an essay of ca 5000 words.

When repeating a failed exam, the candidate can submit a revised version of a previously submitted paper in the course. If the submission is a revised version of a previously submitted paper, this must be specified in the paper.
