Course content

The course includes following subjects: Structure and characteristic properties of prokaryotic microorganisms, i.e. Bacteria and Archaea. Their growth, nutrition and tolerance for physical factors. The energy metabolism of bacteria, including fermentation, aerobic and anaerobic respiration, utilization of inorganic compounds and photosynthesis. Properties of bacterial viruses and their reproduction. Bacterial mutagenesis and genetics, including genetic exchange by transformation, transduction and conjugation. Taxonomy and evolution. Description of chosen groups of bacteria. Antibiotics and mechanisms for antibiotic resistance. Microbe-host interactions. Exercises: Microscopy and microbiological techniques. Enrichment and isolation of Bacteria and Archaea from natural materials. Physiological experiments and quantitative microbial analysis.

Learning outcome

After finishing this course, the students are expected to:
- Master basic microbiological techniques (e.g. sterile techniques, microscopy, traditional microbial tests).
- Have knowledge about microbial phylogeny and be able to describe all forms of microbial energy metabolisms.
- Describe the structure of a bacterial cell, and the central processes in cell division.
- Describe the basic principles for growing microorganisms in the laboratory, including the composition of culture media.
- Describe the classification of viruses, and the central characteristics of the viruses in the seven different groups.
- Give a general overview of eukaryotic microorganisms.
- Describe properties and specific characteristics of chosen bacteria, including their possible applications in industry.
- Have basic knowledge in microbial ecology.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, laboratory exercises, reports. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
