About the course

Course content

The course provides an introduction to organizational theory, emphasizing the interaction between people, technology, and structure. It presents key concepts and models for how organizations are designed, managed, and developed. Students become familiar with the historical development of organizational theory, from classical perspectives such as Taylorism and Human Relations to more recent approaches emphasizing holistic thinking and the alignment between technical and social systems.The course covers topics such as division of labor, integration and coordination, decision-making processes, learning in organizations, and project work as part of both operational and development-oriented activities. Emphasis is placed on linking theoretical understanding to practical examples and basic organizational analyses, providing insight into how organizations function internally and as part of larger systems.

Learning outcome

The subject is compulsory in the first year of the study program MTIØT. After completing the course, the student has basic knowledge of organizational theory, emphasizing the interaction between technology, structure, and people. The student understands how classical and modern perspectives have shaped approaches to organizing work. The course provides insight into how organizations are designed and developed, and how structural and human factors must be aligned to function effectively. The student can carry out an organizational analysis and apply central theories and concepts in practical contexts. The student views organizations as holistic systems and can reflect on how organizational theory can be used to understand and improve work practices.

The assessment in the course is based on an individual written exam early in the semester and a group assignment at the end of the semester. The individual written exam counts for 60 percent of the final grade, while the group assignment counts for 40 percent.

Only the written school exam can be retaken during the re-sit examination period, and it may be changed to an oral exam. The group assignment must be completed at the next regular examination if it has not already been submitted.

Industrial Economics and Technology Management (MTIØT)

Required previous knowledge

Only students at Industrial Economics and Technology Management can attend to the course.
