About the course

Course content

The course looks at differences between structural design and structural analyses with a focus on the system level of design, exanimating structures as larger entities. Here we will examine selected topics within computational design of structures and structural systems. That is, the focus is on the digital design of structure with the use of fundamental mechanical knowledge (static and dynamic). Comparison between traditional design approach and the new methodologies, like parametric modeling, artificial intelligence, etc. is presented. Parametric modelling is explained in detail, also by the exercise done during the lectures. The following topics are also included: Analysis of construction systems and load carrying systems. Such as thin shells, lattice structures, bridges and in general long span structures are presented, designed and explained, 3D FE modelling of joints and influence of joint type on the global behavior of the structure, dynamic and serviceability issues in bridge design, buckling analysis. Every topic in the course will be based on the use of digital tools such as: AutoCAD, Dynamo, Robot or Abaqus. Note, changes may occur.

Learning outcome

Design of structures treats themes in engineering and design of integrated construction systems, discusses especially how different systems carrying forces and contributes to the necessary rigidity, helps to control the behaviour of the structure and its capacity. Use the ability to use the design behaviour and see significance of the choices made with respect to the idealizations of load, system and detail design, is central. Design of structures has the following learning objectives. Knowledge - The candidate should have knowledge of: construction design and a comprehensive understanding of the structures at the system level, the use of parametric models to design systems and use them in the development of projects, the implementation of form-finding, conceptual engineering design and the use of project development, evaluation of forces on a structure from applied loads down to foundations, evaluation of structures resistance and stiffness characteristics to find a suitable balance, assessment of: necessary stiffening of buildings, structural elements, surfaces and shapes, and evaluate formers spacious significantly as structural elements in constructions, how to use and modify calculations. Skills - The candidate can: realistic modelling of structures and structural systems, conduct necessary idealizations and simplifications, perform comprehensive structural analysis, design construction details as part of the overall system, design structures using parametric modelling and conceptual design. Drive a project and develop appropriate concepts, make simple assessments of structures on the basis of knowledge of material properties, loads and components, perform calculations with reliability and probability of collapse, and calculating and assessing the structure suitability of projects. General competence - The candidate should: mastering all tasks related to structural design at the system level, evaluating various structural systems and exploit their good sides, general design and necessary detailing of a design concepts, be able to assemble structural components, and could set up their own models and analyses.

Learning methods and activities

The subject will be given by lectures, exercises and project. The project and 3/4 of the exercises must be approved in order to get admission to the exam. The lectures and exercises are in English when students who do not speak Norwegian take the course. If the teaching is given in English, the examination will be given in English only. Students are free to choose Norwegian or English for written assessments.
