Course content

Electrical, thermal, magnetic and optical properties of materials. Advanced materials and applications related to energy production (solar cells, wind turbines and fuel cells) and storage (membrane technology and batteries).

Learning outcome

Knowledge - The candidate has knowledge of electrical, thermal, magnetic and optical properties of materials. - The candidate has knowledge of selected advanced materials and is familiar with research and development work within the field. - The candidate has knowledge of different technologies for renewable energy production. - The candidate has knowledge of different technologies for energy storage. Skills - The candidate can plan and carry out laboratory work and document the work in written reports. - The candidate can find and process relevant literature in advanced materials and applications. - The candidate can put production of renewable energy and energy storage in a global and socioeconomic context. - The candidate can perform calculations related to the capacity and efficiency of selected technologies. General competence - The candidate can plan and carry out a project in material technology in a group. - The candidate can communicate project work in writing and verbally. - The candidate has insight into the environmental, health, social and economic consequences of selected technical applications.

Learning methods and activities

Re-sit exam in March. In case of re-sit exam the written exam may be changed to oral exam. Exercises must be approved to pass a written exam. Project work must be approved to submit the project report. Re-sit exam and voluntary repetition may be carried out for each assesment. There is a right to make a complaint against grades in each assessment independently. In the case of applications for crediting, approving and filing of subjects from previous cohorts or other institutions' corresponding education programs, each application will be processed individually and the applicant must be able to include credits reduction on overlapping subjects.

Required previous knowledge

Access to the course requires admission to the study programme Bachelor of Engineering, Materials Technology, NTNU, Trondheim.
