Course content

Design Thinking is a human-oriented product development and innovation process.
The course provides an introduction to design thinking, and introduces students to visual communication and a design-driven project.

Learning outcome

Knowledge: The candidate has developed basic understanding of the designers mindset and methods.

Skills: By applying design thinking in an interdisciplinary team the candidate has solved a case problem.

General qualifications:
The candidate has learned basic user centered methods, used on wicked problems. The candidate has also learned basic use of visualization as communication techniques.

Learning methods and activities

The course is project based, and consists of lectures and five exercises distributed throughout the semester. The first four exercises are considered pass/ fail, and must be passed to take the final verbal presentation.
During the exercises the student is led through a process to solve a specific case. The final presentation is the basis for final grade. Group work is done in interdisciplinary teams, and the lectures will provide relevant input to advance in the project. It is expected that the candidate read the curriculum on their own. The candidate must be enrolled in a group by October the 1th to participate further in the course.

Lerdal, Erik (2007), Slagkraft - Håndbok i ideutvikling, Gyldendal. Other literature will be distributed on It's Learing.

Recommended:
Brown, Tim (2009), Change By Design - How design thinking transforms organizations and inspires innovation, Harper-Collings.
