About

About the course

Course content

Cryptography; symmetric and public-key, cryptographic protocols, key distribution, authentication, digital signature structures.
Network security; access control, services and mechanisms for authentication, network security protocols, application layer security and secure network management.
System security; intrusion detection, malicious software, firewalls, identification.

Learning outcome

A. Knowledge:
To get a basic understanding of principles and practice of cryptography and network security by gaining knowledge in four broad categories:
1) cryptographic algorithms;
2) techniques and algorithms for key management, key distribution and user authentication;
3) use of cryptographic algorithms in network protocols and network applications.
4) techniques for securing computers against intruders and malicious software.

B. Skills:
1) To be able to evaluate security of systems with respect to appropriate use of security services and mechanisms;
2) To be able to design basic security architectures through selection and integration of relevant security components.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, practical work and exercises.

Further on evaluation

Portfolio assessment is the basis for the grade in the course. The portfolio includes technical exercises which count 20%, a report on practical work which counts for 20% and a written final exam which counts 60%. The results for the parts are given in %-scores. The entire portfolio is assigned a letter grade. The written exam is given in English only. The exam can be answered in English or in Norwegian.
If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
If a student also after the re-sit exam has the final grade F/failed, the student must repeat the entire course. Works that count in the final grade must be repeated.
