Course content

Lumped and distributed precipitation - runoff models. Data and data quality. Updating and inflow prognosis. GIS systems in hydrological applications. Floods, flood warning systems and flood zones. Snow hydrology. Simulation of land use changes.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

The student should have knowledge of:

  • How hydrological models can be used for planning and operation of power plants, flood simulations and land use changes.
  • Theorietical foundation of the models
  • What simplifications and approcimations that must be made for practical use
  • Which input required, uncertainty and errors in the data, and methods for correction
  • Calibration, Uncertainty and evaluation of results.
  • Use of GIS in hydrological modelling

Skills

Students will be able to:

  • Calibrate and use rainfall-runoff HBV model to calculate drainage in a catchment
  • Calculating snowmelt with a degree day model and an energy balance model
  • Setup and application of a distributed model.

General competance

Students can:

  • Link between basic hydrological theory and application of models
  • Choose between which problems that may be solved with simplistic models, and which require more complicated models
  • Understand how GIS can be used for hydrologic and hydraulic calculations

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and seminars. Exercises and applications of computer models.

Compulsory assignments

  • Computer exercises

Further on evaluation

If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
