About

About the course

Course content

Processes and methods for design and operation of treatment systems for water and wastewater, drinking water distribution systems and waste water collection systems, including stormwater. The components of distribution and collection systems, water needs, composition of wastewater, drinking water quality, disinfection, effluent water quality, quality and environmental hygiene, process theory for water and wastewater, and selected methods for treatment of drinking water and wastewater.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

The course gives students an introduction to the basic theories for water, wastewater, and stormwater. Water and wastewater systems, stormwater calculations, treatment of drinking water and wastewater, applying a selected set of methods for design and analysis.

Students will gain knowledge in:

  • demand for water supply to households, industry and public servises
  • the components of water supply systems from source to recipient
  • the components in wastewater collection systems for both combined and separate systems
  • urban hydrology and relationships between precipitation and runoff
  • process theory for water and wastewater treatment
  • characteristics of waste water (amount and composition)
  • regulations for drinking water quality and effluent quality
  • methods for treatment of water and waste water

Skills

  • calculate the demand needs for water supply to households, industry and public servises
  • calculations on the components of water supply systems
  • calculations on the components in wastewater collection systems for both combined and separate systems
  • calculate max runoff, construct hydrography, and calculate the effect of lands changes on the runoff peaks and volumes.
  • calculate reaction kinetics, reaction rates, volume, and residence time for processes for water and wastewater treatment.
  • characteristics of waste water (amount and composition)
  • regulations for drinking water quality and effluent quality
  • methods for treatment of water and waste water

General competence

Students demonstrate an understanding of the requirements for design, components and methods for systems and treatment plants for drinking water and waste water.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and compulsory exercises. The lectures and exercises are in English when students who do not speak Norwegian take the course.

Compulsory assignments

  • Exercises

Further on evaluation

If there is a re-sit exam, the examination form may be changed from written to oral. To re-take the course all parts of the assessment must be redone. All parts of the assessment must have a passing grade in order to pass the course.
