Course content

The course provides the student with an opportunity to choose a specialisation within the research methods relevant for the Master of science in Counselling and the Master of Science in Learning in Working Life and Society. This includes the presentation and discussion of methodology, philosophy of science and research ethics, as well as principles and challenges within the chosen method. There will be a particular focus on analysis of empirical materials within the research process.

The topics for the specialisation can vary each time the course is offered. The term paper should be a discussion of a methodological research question related to the chosen specialisation. The paper can be related to the research question and choice of method for the planned master’s thesis. The student is obliged to choose her/his own curriculum in relation to the paper.

Learning outcome

The student has developed advanced knowledge in methodological and ethical challenges within their chosen specialisation.

The student is able to critically and autonomously present, reflect on and assess research within the chosen specialisation, and can carry out practical assignments within the chosen specialisation.

General competence:
The student has specialised insight into and understanding of methodology, philosophy og sceince and research ethics within the chosen specialisation, e.g. qualitative method or Q-method.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, seminars. Take a look at blackboard for detailed information about compulsory assignments.

Compulsory assignments

  • Approved exercises.
  • Approved list of chosen curriculum for the term paper
  • Participation in class 80%

Further on evaluation

Term paper of about 15 pages (A4, line spacing 1,5, Times New Roman 12 pt.). Both relevant compulsory curriculum and chosen curriculum should be used in the paper.

Specific conditions

Exam registration requires that class registration is approved in the same semester. Compulsory activities from previous semester may be approved by the department.

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Counselling Science (MRÅDG)
Learning in Working Life and Society (MVL)

Required previous knowledge

VLR2007/VLR3007 or similar. The required prerequisite knowledge must be fulfilled in order to be admitted to the course.
