About interaction design

*Making a better world through better design*

We are surrounded by technology in our everyday lives, in need of usable and user-friendly solutions. The everyday use of technology in society is staggering compared to its use in those early days, as we surround ourselves with technology at home, at work, and in public.

In a society where computers are pervasive, and digital interfaces and interactivity are everywhere, it is of increasing importance that we ensure inclusive, intuitive and efficient human-computer interaction. In addition to developing the right functionalities, we need to ensure positive user experiences and usability for all users in the contexts of use. NTNU provides students with the opportunity to learn the skills to create these solutions through the Master program in Interaction Design. Our vision is to make a better world through better design.

Brief outline

This is a two-year master program (120 ECTS credits).

The Master programme in Interaction Design teaches the students to put the users’ needs and requirements first in digital interactive environments and user interfaces. The program provides the students with knowledge and awareness of human factors and conditions in interaction and interface design. The program also focuses on system design methodologies and strategies for the usability-optimalization of products and services. In addition, the program will enable the students to initiate, lead and perform usability engineering in research and development projects.

The students will be able to specialize in areas within usability and human factors in interaction design, user-oriented information architecture and user-centered design, universal design, health informatics, mobile systems and project management.

Major areas of study:

  • Usability and human factors
  • User-oriented information architecture
  • Strategies in user-centered design

The program is organized as course modules of 7,5 ECTs, and a master thesis of 30 ECTs. In the 3rd semester, students will study theoretical material to support the focus of the thesis, learn to formulate relevant research topics and questions, and start to prepare one of the thesis chapters. During this time, students will be appointed a thesis supervisor. More information on the Master program structure can be found in the curriculum description.
