Are you passionate about materials, chemistry, and sustainability—and eager to shape the technologies of tomorrow?
The international Master’s programme in Materials Science and Chemical Engineering at NTNU is designed for students who want to dive deep into the science behind advanced materials and chemical processes, and apply this knowledge to solve real-world challenges. Whether you're fascinated by energy systems, industrial chemistry, or functional materials, this programme offers a blend of theory, hands-on lab work, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Over two years, you’ll be part of a vibrant academic community at NTNU’s Gløshaugen campus, working alongside leading researchers and fellow students from around the world.
With the Master in Materials Science and Chemical Engineering, you will:
- Specialize in either materials science (e.g., metallurgy, energy technology, functional materials) or chemical engineering (e.g., catalysis, reactor design, membrane technology).
- Gain hands-on experience through lab work, projects, and a master’s thesis based on real research challenges.
- Learn to use advanced software tools and programming for modeling and analysis.
- Understand how engineering solutions impact sustainability, and how to design processes and materials with minimal environmental footprint.
- Collaborate across disciplines and contribute to innovation in industries such as energy, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and manufacturing.
- Develop digital and analytical skills essential for modern engineering roles
Graduates of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering (MSMATCH) are qualified for a wide range of careers in industry, research, and the public sector. You can work in energy production, chemical industry, environmental consulting, or pursue a PhD in engineering. The programme also leads to the Sivilingeniør title in Norway, opening doors to leadership roles in technology and innovation.
The programme is taught in English and welcomes students from all backgrounds. NTNU’s Gløshaugen campus offers a rich student experience, with access to modern labs, collaborative spaces, and a vibrant city life in Trondheim.
The MSMATCH programme offers two specializations:
- Materials Science and Engineering
- Chemical Engineering
All students take a common introductory course that highlights the synergy between the two fields. You will also choose elective courses, complete a research project, and write a master’s thesis.
Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree in engineering, with relevant coursework in materials science and/or chemical engineering.
There is additonal requirements.
The student advisors are your contacts in all questions about the programme, i. e., compulsory and optional subjects, exams, deadlines, etc. Please contact the advisors if you have questions.
