PHD PROGRAMME IN ENGINEERING

Learning outcome

Knowledge

After completing the PhD Programme in Engineering the candidate is expected to

  • have thorough knowledge within at least one of the areas of research covered by the faculty
  • be familiar with, and able to use, the theories and methods that underlie the research area
  • be familiar with the current research frontiers within the research area as well as important trends seen from a technological perspective
  • have a thorough understanding of scientific methods that are relevant in the research area

Skills

After completing the PhD Programme in Engineering the candidate should be able to

  • identify and formulate research topics and conduct research and development on a high international level
  • develop new knowledge, theories and methods within the research area
  • use acquired knowledge, theories and methods independently to find general solutions to relevant technological problems
  • evaluate models, methods, analysis tools, estimations and solutions independently and choose between different solutions from a scientific view
  • handle complex academic questions and challenge established knowledge and practices in his / her field of research
  • communicate complex and advanced scientific theories to both specialists within the research field and the general audience

General competence

After completing the PhD Programme in Engineering the candidate should be able to

  • explain issues within the area of research in a general social view and be able to assess ethical issues in connection to application of the field of research in the society
  • communicate research and development through recognized national and international channels
  • see the research area in an international perspective and be able to participate in discussions within his / her field of research in international fora
  • assess the need for, take initiative to and carry on innovation
