Admission

PhD programme in Engineering

Admission

Admission

In addition to a master's degree or equivalent and a strong academic record, you must have obtained a B or better during your last 2 years of study (corresponding to 120 credits/ECTS).

Financing is an absolute requirement for admission to a PhD programme. Funding can be both through NTNU and other sources. Available PhD positions at NTNU are continuously posted online.

Application

There is no common application deadline. As each doctoral candidate's study is typically financed by a research fellowship, the first step is to check for available fellowship positions in your field.

The application for admission must be completed in cooperation with your potential main supervisor and must be submitted to the relevant department. The main supervisor and the department must give their assessment of the application before it is sent on to the faculty for further evaluation.

The application form and other forms related to the PhD at IV can be found here: English / Norwegian.

Applications from People's Republic of China (PRC):

Effective from 2017, NTNU requires that China Credentials Verification (CHESICC) must verify all Degree Certificates (学位证书) and transcripts from universities in China.

Applications from Islamic Republic of Pakistan

Effective from 2019, NTNU requires that Higher Education Commission, Pakistan (HEC) must verify all Degree Certificates and transcripts from the universities in Pakistan.

Applications from State of Eritrea, Republic of Ghana, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Republic of the Philippines, Republic of the Sudan, Republic of Uganda, Canada and USA

Effective from 2019, NTNU requires that the applicants from the above-mentioned countries must have their university send a paper copy of the Degree Certificates directly to the Department before they can get admission to the PhD programme.

Doctoral Degree Committee

It is the Doctoral Degree Committee that assesses the application for admission. They have four meetings in the spring semester and three meetings in the autumn semester.

Supervisor

A PhD candidate must have at least two supervisors. The main supervisor should hold a research position at NTNU; a professor, associate professor or adjunct professor. The main supervisor must have a doctoral degree, or equivalent qualifications, within the relevant field of study and be an active researcher.
