Dr. Mitchell studies authoritarian institutions, political development, state-building, and regime finance.
Dr. Mitchell is a Postdoctoral Fellow in Peace and Conflict Research at NTNU from 2021-2023. Before arriving at NTNU, he was a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Postdoctoral Fellow at Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan. From 2020-2021, he taught at the Qatar Campus of Texas A&M University. He received his PhD from Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas, USA.
Research
Austin studies how authoritarian regimes create new institutions to avoid conflict and political instability. His work focuses on state-building in both contemporary and historical time periods.
