Course content
The course takes up different perspectives in health promotion research. The course gives historical background for the development of Health Promotion Research, the theoretical approaches that is most evident and the empirical methods that is basis for the research. The course aims at giving background for critical discussions both on the theoretical approaches as well as to the empirical research, and challenges the students to be innovative in thinking on how translational research can contribute so empirical research results can be understandable to practise areas, and implemented and evaluated in practical settings. Positive psychology and other health theoretical approaches will be basis for discussions in a salutogenic framework. The areas that the course offers approaches to will typically be in global health research, health promotion among the ill, health promotion in the life span, health promotion in the work place and Best Practice in health promotion.
Learning outcome
This course aims at updating the students on new theoretical and empirical research on the health promotion research area. The course further has as an objective to develop critical thinking both toward theoretical approaches and empirical research on that area. It is a goal to develop a deeper understanding for different methods used on the research area, both in quantitative as well as in qualitative measures. It is further a goal to develop an understanding in the students that there is much to gain from studying bordering research areas and possible contributions theoretically as well as methodologically.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures, student presentations of papers with feedback from the teachers and audience, individually and as a group. The course may be taught in either Norwegian or English. The course is offered when teaching resources are available and not less then 5 persons are registered.
Compulsory assignments
- Participation, presentation of paper and paper discussions
Required previous knowledge
To get the course acknowledged as a PhD course the participant needs to have a master degree. Master students can sometimes be let in to the course, but do not earn ECTs.
