Course content

The course will deal with how people use and experience mediated communication in the workplace and organizations. Students will gain insight into the role of communication in modern organizational players and with a special emphasis on different media forms, including Information Communications and Technology (ICT). The course will also highlight the relationship between face-to-face and mediated communication in organizations and the importance of differences and similarities between these areas can possess. Students will be introduced to key concepts related to ICT use and communication in organizations. Key research traditions in the field will also be presented and discussed. Other themes seen in this perspective can be conflict handling, internal communications, external communications (e.g., reputation, image and CSR), the relationship between internal and external communication, and communication challenges of organizational change.

Learning outcome

Knowledge: The student has knowledge of communication in modern organizations. The student has knowledge of various mediated forms of communication, including ICT. Students also have insight into the relationship between face-to-face and mediated communication in organizations.

Skills: Students can discuss key concepts related to the use of ICT and communication in organizations. Students can discuss important topics such as internal communications, external communications (eg, reputation, image and CSR), the relationship between internal and external communication, communication challenges of organizational change and conflict.

General competence: The student have knowledge of key concepts and research traditions in the fields of communication in organizations and media psychology.

Seminars, lectures, field work, supervision and presentation.

Obligatory activities must be approved before the exam. Compulsory activities from previous semester will be approved by the department.

Specific conditions

Required previous knowledge

The course is subject to programme prerequisites; this means that the topic is reserved for students who are admitted to the Masters in Work and Organizational Psychology or Masters in Media, Communications and Information Technology.
