Course content

The subject is integrating technological and social sciences literature on risk issues into a balanced risk governance approach. The course has a main focus on risk in socio technical systems and societal safety. Major accident risk will also be covered. The main elements in the course are: risk identification, pre-assessment; risk appraisal, - risk and concern assessment; risk tolerability and acceptability judgments and evaluations; isk management and dexision-making; and risk communication and risk perception

A main subject is the concept of risk in relation to risk perception and communication, dilemmas in decision-making, ethics and acceptance criteria. Another part deals with external conditions by society, regulatory regimes and market for risk governance, plus organizational capacity and capabilities for risk governance. Assessments of vulnerability of critical infrastructure and technological innovations are dealt with in another part. Crisis management and mass media coverage of risk issues are other central topics.

Learning outcome

The subject’s position and function in the study:
It is mandatory for the students at the master programs MIHMS and MHMS. It is a "K-subjects" which means that it is an option for most students at technology studies.


Knowledge:
The aims are to provide knowledge on a conceptual framework for risk evaluations and risk management across academic disciplines and independent of specific hazards and threats. The subject gives knowledge of how the concept of "risk" is used within different academic disciplines.The subject gives an insight in different theories on understanding and modeling accident risks.

Skills:
The subject gives a framework for analyzing risk issues in society and also in relation to the students’ own technological profile.The subject provides skills in risk communication, both risk rhetoric and risk dialogue, and ability to critical examination of risk news in mass media.

General competence:
The subject provides general competence for own risk evaluations based cross-disciplinary and ethical reflections.

Learning methods and activities

The teaching methods will partly be traditional lectures, partly introductions for questions, comments and discussions of specific cases and actual events. Real risk issues and incidents are applied in the teaching. The lectures are mainly for the theoretic introduction to the subject. The exercises apply problem based learning principles. The mandatory term paper which count on the final mark of exam will be adapted to risk problems of special relevance for the students’ study profile. Portfolio assessment is the basis for the grade in the course. The portfolio includes a term paper (40%) and a final written exam (60%). The results for the parts are given in %-scores, while the entire portfolio is assigned a letter grade. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
