Musicology - Master's Programme

The language of instruction in this programme is Norwegian. Read more about the programme on the Norwegian website.

The master's programme in Musicology aims to develop the students' knowledge and comprehension of musical diversity and the various historical and modern phenomena with which music is affiliated.

About the programme

The aim of the programme of study is to enable students to strengthen their ability to critically acquire traditional and contemporary musicological theories within music history, ethnomusicology and music theory.

Furthermore, students are given individual instruction in their principal instrument as well as group instruction in courses embracing aural training, improvisation and choral conducting in order to strengthen their practical proficiency.

Students may suggest a topic for their master's thesis, but are recommended to choose projects within areas where the Department of Music has special research competence, such as:

  • Western music history
  • Ethnomusicology and world music
  • Composition
  • Music theory
  • Music analysis
  • Film music
  • Music didactics
  • Music sociology
  • Music psychology

The master's programme in Musicology provides students with a unique opportunity for designing a programme of study with main emphasis on composition and composition theory. Thus, an extensive piece of music as a project may be approved as the main or tributary component of the students' master's theses.
