About

CV

I am professor in science and technology studies with a focus on sustainable technology in society. I have a PhD in sociology from Frankfurt University and a master in sociology (major), political science and German language and literature (minors) from Frankfurt University. A cross-cutting theme in my research is the qualitative study of technology end-use in everyday life. Daily lives are filled with (more and more) technologies, ranging from indispensable gadgets to the most basic infrastructures. I continue to be fascinated by the question of what these technologies are doing with people and what do people do with them? This is, then, also the perspective from which I address questions of participation in technology development, sustainable transitions, and innovation.

My empirical research started in the late 1990s with an analysis of early Internet use, and has since then moved on to sustainable buildings, neighbourhoods and cities. The theoretical perspectives of practice theory, symbolic interactionism and infrastructure studies have been particularly useful in this work. Originally raised academically with Horkeimer, Adorno and Löwenthal, after I have moved to Norway, the work of Law, Latour and Callon has had a profound influence on my thinking. More recently, I have hardly written anything which is not in one way or another indepted to Star's work on infrastructures.

Research

I have for almost two decades constantly been involved in interdisciplinary research projects. While never without frictions and frustrations, these collaborations with experts from other domains are my way of acting out curiosity and thirst for new knowledge.

  • The good infrastructures lab

FME Research Centre on Zero Emission Neighbourhoods in Smart Cities (FME ZEN)

FME ZEN will develop solutions for zero emission neighbourhoods. Our role is end-user research and the organisation of civic living labs at the pilot sites of the centre.

iClimabuilt

The EU project tests innovative, energy friendly building facade solutions. We contribute to WP6 and its living labs.

Sustainable digital transformations (SustainDiT)

In this interdisciplinary collaboration which is funded by NTNU's strategic funds we explore the connections between digitalisation and sustainability.

Kompetansenettverk for livskvalitet i byenes nabolag

How can citizens participate in the operation and maintenance of their neighbourhoods? We explore this question together with Trondheim Municipality through experimenting with measures that improve the lives of the residents at Trondheim's Østersundsgate.

TalentLab

Funded by EEA Norway grants, this project seeks to produce knowledge which enables secondary education to contribute to regional development.
