About

I am professor in science and technology studies at NTNU, where I investigate the intersection of infrastructure, agency, and democracy in contemporary society. My work asks how material infrastructures—from digital platforms to urban systems—constitute political subjects and shape the conditions for democratic participation.

My research is organized around three interconnected themes:

1. Infrastructures of Ruin and Salvage
I examine how infrastructures operate not merely as stable technical systems but as sites of continuous vulnerability, breakdown, and contestation. Moving beyond the dominant "creativity dispositif" (Reckwitz) of late modernity, I develop the concepts of a maintenance dispositif and salvage thinking—approaches that value repair, continuity, and improvisation in a state of infrastructural ruination. My work asks how we can dwell and act within capitalist ruins without succumbing to techno-utopian enchantments.

2. Digital Infrastructure and Machine Audiences
I study how digital infrastructures and AI intermediaries reshape agency, demand, and citizenship. I investigate the rise of "machine audiences" that absorb human signals, the "simulacrum" of AI-assisted knowledge work, and the political stakes of digital sovereignty and the fossil-free internet. My empirical work spans platform exit strategies, the infrastructural conditions of 4E cognition, and the "boring" infrastructure of sustainable scholarship.

3. Democratic Resilience and Broken World Thinking
I investigate how democracies can be sustained through everyday practices of maintenance and care. Framed by "broken world thinking" and multispecies entanglement, my current projects examine how citizens support infrastructures through invisible care labor, how informal networks constitute "human infrastructure," and how maintenance practices enable democratic participation in precarious times.

Empirical trajectory: My research began in the late 1990s with studies of early Internet use, moved through sustainable buildings and neighborhoods (including leadership roles in FME ZEB and in ZEN's civic living labs), and now focuses on the political and phenomenological dimensions of infrastructure maintenance and development.

Theoretical lineage: Originally trained in critical theory (Frankfurt School), my work was profoundly reshaped by actor-network theory (Law, Latour, Callon) and Susan Leigh Star's infrastructure studies. My recent theoretical engagements center on "broken world thinking" (Steven Jackson, Anna Tsing), 4E cognition, and the phenomenology of everyday technological entanglement.

Academic leadership: I am currently leading the PhD program in Interdisciplinary Studies of Culture and I supervise PhD and MA students working on knowledge production in sustainability transitions, stakeholder inclusion in coastal protection, tidal energy in peripheral regions, intersectionality and urban planning, mobility in the Global South, and practices of failure detection in construction.

Research

I have for almost two decades constantly been involved in interdisciplinary research projects. While never without frictions and frustrations, these collaborations with experts from other domains are my preferred way of satisfying my curiosity and thirst for knowledge.

  • The good infrastructures lab

FME Research Centre on Zero Emission Neighbourhoods in Smart Cities (FME ZEN)

FME ZEN will develop solutions for zero emission neighbourhoods. Our role is end-user research and the organisation of civic living labs at the pilot sites of the centre.

iClimabuilt

The EU project tests innovative, energy friendly building facade solutions. We contribute to WP6 and its living labs.

Sustainable digital transformations (SustainDiT)

In this interdisciplinary collaboration which is funded by NTNU's strategic funds we explore the connections between digitalisation and sustainability.

Kompetansenettverk for livskvalitet i byenes nabolag

How can citizens participate in the operation and maintenance of their neighbourhoods? We explore this question together with Trondheim Municipality through experimenting with measures that improve the lives of the residents at Trondheim's Østersundsgate.

TalentLab

Funded by EEA Norway grants, this project seeks to produce knowledge which enables secondary education to contribute to regional development.
