About

My research sits at the intersection of geotechnical engineering, climate change adaptation, and digital technology. As climate shifts drive more frequent and intense weather events, my work focuses on making critical infrastructure and communities more resilient to natural hazards—specifically water-triggered geohazards like landslides.

By bridging the gap between traditional earth sciences and advanced computational modeling, my research aims to transform how we predict, monitor, and mitigate geotechnical risks.

Core Research Pillars

  • Climate Resilience & Geohazards: I develop predictive frameworks to quantify how shifting precipitation patterns impact slope stability and landslide susceptibility. This includes high-profile, large-deformation 3D modeling of catastrophic events (such as the 2020 Gjerdrum quick clay landslide) to better understand retrogressive failure mechanisms.

  • Physics-Informed Machine Learning: A major focus of my current work is integrating data science with physical laws. I explore the application of Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) to solve inverse problems in groundwater flow, as well as using deep learning to model soil-water interactions.

  • Reliability & Risk-Based Optimization: Grounded in my early work on the structural reliability of offshore wind turbine monopile foundations, I specialize in probabilistic geotechnical design. I develop advanced reliability methods (like the Hyperspheric Integral Reliability Method) to account for soil uncertainty in critical infrastructure.

  • Digitalization & Early Warning Systems: My recent projects leverage emerging technologies—including Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite data and Virtual Reality (VR) environments—to build proactive early warning systems and immersive disaster simulation tools for emergency response training.

Research Impact & Collaborations

Driven by a combination of academic rigor and industry application, my work is frequently conducted in close collaboration with leading research institutes like SINTEF and initiatives such as the CERCIS Gemini Centre. By combining field data, physical principles, and modern AI, I aim to deliver actionable, data-driven solutions for municipalities, engineering firms, and infrastructure owners facing the challenges of a changing climate.

Publications

Hyperspheric Integral Reliability Method for efficient reliability analysis of geotechnical ultimate limit states

HINT method for reliability analysis of geotechnical ultimate limit states is built on the shear strength reduction mechanism. HINT utilizes the factor of safety as a measure of distance to the failure limit to improve reliability analyses.

Application of physics-informed neural networks to inverse problems in unsaturated groundwater flow

This paper investigates the application of PINNs to inverse problems in unsaturated groundwater flow. The novelty of the paper originates from the development of PINN formulations for the Richards equation that requires a single neural network.
