Marko Valenta
Background and activities
I am a sociologist and professor at the Department of Social Work (ISA) at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), in Trondheim, Norway. I lead the research group for Migration and welfare studies at NTNU-ISA.
I did my graduate work in Sociology at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology where I also received my PhD in Sociology. I am author and co-editor of 4 books. I have also written more than 100 research reports, book chapters and journal articles published in leading journals on ethnicity and migrations such as Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies, International Migration, Journal of Refugee Studies, Ethnic and Racial Studies, International Social Work, Symbolic Interaction and Ethnicities.
I have been involved in several research projects in Norway, Bosnia, Croatia, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Singapore and Ghana. My research interests are sociology of ethnicity and public policies, migration and integration and asylum policies and work with reception, integration and return of labour migrants, asylum seekers and refugees.
I am a member of the European IMISCOE (International Migration, Integration and Social Cohesion). I am also a member of the Nordic IMER network, and I work with the strengthening of IMER network for Southeastern Europe and the network for comparative migration research. I have a long experience with teaching and supervising students at all levels. I am responsible for these courses at the Department of Social Work:
