Scaling up battery cell manufacturing and testing is a critical step to take battery materials from a lab towards industrial relevance. 
 
Although Norway has a lot of initiatives on batteries, the local knowledge and expertise related to practical battery cell manufacturing is still at an infant stage. This is something that this research area aims to change as it enables a forum for joint learning between all relevant Norwegian partners working on battery upscaling.

Three different pilot lines

Our research area is based on the three different pilot lines that were built as part of the Norwegian Advanced Battery Lab Infrastructure (NABLA) – located at SINTEF, IFE and Morrow – which were opened in 2023. Combined with collaboration from international research institutes with prior expertise on this field, the goal is to quickly get up to speed on the local knowledge of battery cell manufacturing and thereby ensure useful assistance to the Norwegian battery industry.
