Lectures will cover general anatomy, respiration, circulation, osmoregulation and acid-base balance, smoltification, regulation of boyancy, movement, sensory physiology, stress, gastrointestinal system and sexual maturation. Introductions will also be given to basal immunology.
Practical lab studies include comparative anatomy and physiology of Atlantic salmon and at least one marine species available. Studies also include evaluation of organ histology and stress experiments.
Learning outcome
Knowledge:
On completion of the course the student should have obtained valuable skills in fish anatomy and physiology including regulatory mechanisms.
Skills:
The student should be able to design and perform tests of fish osmoregulatory capacity, establish sedation, perform blood sampling, and examine simple histological preparations from fish.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures: 30 hours
Laboratory course: 4 days, mandatory
Examinations can be held orally outside teaching semester

Further on evaluation
All assessment components included in the course must be passed. In the case of 'failure' or 'retake' , the final written examination needs to be taken again. Appeals for reassessment apply to the final written examination only. The individual components will not be graded and assessment consists of an overall final grade. The written exam can be changed to an oral exam in the semester when the course is not taught.
Supplementary regulations UTF §5-6 at NTNU applicable for re-sit examinations (oral and written) in science courses are:
1. Final examination in each semester -for courses with prefix BI, IT and KJ a final examination is held during the examination period every semester.
2. New assessment incase of fail - please refer to the course description for details on which components of the course need to be retaken in case of re-assessment.
